Hidden Faces

This mosaic began with a box of Fiestaware donated to the studio.  Students created the mosaic by first smashing the plates into small tesserae that were used to create the piece.  The design is inspired by the abstract paintings of Jean Dubuffet, the curves defining faces throughout the space.

About the Project

This mosaic was created through a Summer Youth Program in the Wyomissing Area School District.  Students in the week long program learned about the benefits and processes in public art design, and the mosaic process.  Where many of the mosaics on Cherry Street were made through carefully shaping the mosaic tesserae, this project took a different approach, working with broken shards of dishes and commercial tile.  The process is like putting a puzzle together on a a verticle surface, and takes a good eye to find the best piece to fit each spot.
