About the Project

The design for this mural began in the summer of 2012, with a series of photos of children from the Second Street Learning Center, who enjoy the playground in front of the proposed wall.  The iconography of someone holding a city in their arms comes from mideval paintings that would portray a patron saint in such a pose.  The PA Migrant Education student artists in this project worked diligently in the mural studio and guided community volunteers to help with the project.  Family and friends joined them at a Family Night Open House at Millmont Elementary School to hear a bilingual presentation about the project and help paint a portion of the mural.  The glass mosaic city in the mural was created by the Public Art Workshop students at Wyomissing JSHS the following school year. The enormous mural was finally installed the summer of 2013.
