Blue Arabesque

Inspired by the complex and beautiful geometry found in Islamic design, artist-in-residence Suzanne Fellows led the Public Art Workshop students to create this rich design filled with pattern within pattern.  With a touch of metallic paint in the highlights, this mural brings an elegant feeling to the Court Street entrance of Baldwin Brass.

About the Project

The mural design began with lead artist Suzanne Fellows introducing the Public Art Workshop students to the history and complex geometry found in Islamic Art.  The students were then guided through the contruction of their own modular, repeating design that many embedded with their own personal symbols.  The student patterns were layered into the larger design using hand-cut stencils. Fortunately, the mural was completed during the winter of 2019-20, before school was closed due to the Covid-19 quarantine.
