The humble pretzel became a symbol of friendship between Reading and its sister city, Reutlingen, Germany. Nearly one hundred small paintings interpret the familiar shape in wildly different styles, creating a collection that is both local and international.

About the Project
The project grew from Reading’s participation in a 2019 street-art festival in Reutlingen, where Berks County artists contributed pretzel-themed works. The idea expanded back home to include local artists, students, and artwork from Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium in Germany. Created during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the collection required flexible studio arrangements and ultimately became a highly visible public display in downtown Reading.
The Berks pretzel collection continues to grow, with plans to install more of these paintings throughout Berks County.
